Another four residents of the Mountainview Village nursing home in Kelowna have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the overall size of the outbreak to 11.

Interior Health declared an outbreak at the Good Samaritan Society retirement home on KLO Road on Nov. 30 after a resident and staff member at the facility tested positive for COVID-19.

Four days later, a resident of the house, a man in his eighties, died of the virus.

More cases were identified at the nursing home by December 9, when a total of seven cases of IH were reported, including the deceased man. The total number of cases has remained stable since then through Thursday.

Julie Williams, communications director for the Good Samaritan Society, said the facility has now had a total of 11 cases of the virus, including four active cases among residents. One resident has fully recovered from the virus, along with all five employees who contracted COVID-19.

Williams says one of the residents just tested positive on Thursday.

Meanwhile, there were only three new cases at the nursing home, according to IH, but noted that “official figures may not capture some cases on the same day”.

The nursing home outbreak is one of three in the Okanagan. The largest by far is at Oliver’s McKinney Place, where 41 residents and 16 employees had tested positive by Wednesday.

Meanwhile, active cases remain between two residents and two employees in Penticton’s Village at the station.

Earlier this month, about 71 percent of COVID deaths in BC came from nursing home residents.
