A Kelowna mother who has been battling cancer since 2016 is in need of a new home after her landlord sold the property.
Kayla Munro was diagnosed with Stage 2B Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2016 at age 25, wrote her life-long friend Phoenix Preshyon, based in Surrey, in a GoFundMe created on her behalf.
Since then, she has received regular immunotherapy appointments but is in need of a reliable vehicle to be able to transport her to and from the hospital, Preshyon said in an interview with iNFOnews.
Her landlord also recently sold the home she has been renting for the last 10 years and her monthly rent expenses are going to increase significantly, she said. Munro is already struggling to make ends meet with her current rent of $900 with a disability payment of $1,200 per month.
“Obviously rent has gone way up in 10 years and she doesn’t like to ask for help,” Preshyon said, adding she eventually agreed to have the fundraiser after some convincing.
The GoFundMe has raised $600 as far as Aug. 14.
“She’s pretty speechless, she didn’t expect anything and she’s beyond grateful that people care,” she said.
Donations of essential items, food or childcare items for Munro’s son with whom she has shared custody would also be welcome, according to the GoFundMe.
Munro may even consider moving to Alberta because rental prices are more affordable, despite not wanting to leave her community, Preshyon said.
Kelowna’s vacancy rate is at less than one percent. A two-bedroom rental in Kelowna on average rents for $2,450 per month, according to Zumper.
