Even though prospective candidates for Kelowna city council can’t file their nomination papers until next week, some of them will be greeting the public Sunday afternoon.

The KLO Neighborhood Association is hosting a meet-the-candidate event from noon to 2 pm Sunday, Aug. 28, in the vacant lot under the new painted turtle mural at Pandosy Street and West Avenue.

The association is also sponsoring the Imagine Pandosy Art Festival and Art Walk that day, which passes by the mural.

“Individuals who have publicly declared their candidacy have been invited to attend, as has Liveable Kelowna, a group comprised of disenfranchised voters,” states a news release from the association.

“With 57 candidates for councilor and 17 for mayor, the public will have a good opportunity to hear candidate’s priorities and how they see the future of the Pandosy – Lakeshore Corridor.”

Liveable Kelowna is a newly-formed group that will endorse candidates who support their call for increased attention to the climate crisis and who welcome more public input into the decision-making process.

There are not likely to be 57 actual council candidates. As of yesterday, that was the number of nomination packages picked up along with 15 for mayor, according to the City of Kelowna website.

In the 2018 election 46% of the nomination packages were returned as formal nominations. In 2014, 58% filed.

Out of the 15 people who picked up papers for mayor, six did not agree to have their names published. Mayor Colin Basran has yet to say if he’s running for re-election.

Of the 57 city council packages, nine were anonymous. Out of those 57, few have publicly declared they’re running.

Nomination papers can only be filed between Aug. 30 and 4 pm on Sept. 9.
