A Kelowna family had a close call early Monday morning when a mattress caught on fire in one of the home’s bedrooms.

At approximately 6 am, Kelowna fire crews responded to a 911 call in the 2300 block of Silver Place.

When they arrived, the fire was not apparent, but one of the residents explained a mattress was ablaze.

Crews entered the home and found the mattress smouldering, then made sure it was out and checked for extension.

The home sustained only minor structural damage, but significant smoke damage. All four occupants made it out safely.

“At this time, we don’t have a cause for the fire, but it is not considered suspicious,” explained platoon captain Shayne Kiehlbauch.

In total, four engines, a rescue truck, a command unit, RCMP, BC Ambulance Service and 22 fire personnel attended the incident.

“The Kelowna fire department would like to remind residents to check their smoke detectors to make sure they are functioning properly,” Keilbauch added.
