Kelowna enterprise lighting burns after improper disposal of oily rags

The Kelowna Fire Department’s swift response resulted in the rescue of a local company on Friday.

According to train driver Kelly Stephens, the firefighters received a call at 9:34 pm about smoke coming from inside a building in the 200 block of Arab Court. Upon arrival, crews confirmed smoke in a two-story store with a single suite below.

After an offensive attack, KFD was able to bring the fire under control from the inside.

On the upper floor, the building suffered only minor smoke and fire damage. The tenant in the lower suite was allowed to return after a brief inspection as it was undamaged.

A total of four engines, a command unit, a rescue team and 18 people were on site to fight the fire. They were supported by the RCMP and Emergency Health Services.

KFD confirmed that the cause of the fire was oily rags in an open container.
