Downtown business owners are frustrated with the city of Kelowna and the snow removal work that is being done.

“There is no snow removal job, there is no snow removal,” said Nikki Hunter, owner of Green Vanity, a downtown Kelowna company.

“Yesterday I pushed my customers’ cars out of the parking garages and that’s crazy for me. Many of our customers with mobility problems are currently unable to even get into the city center. We had a customer in a wheelchair, she needed a group of people to help her get down the street. “

Hunter said the poor driving and parking conditions are affecting their business.

“The reality is, if customers don’t get their cars down here, they won’t come. One of the resistances to downtown shopping was parking. Now you have nowhere to park unless you have a vehicle that can actually handle getting in, ”Hunter told Global News on Wednesday.

Snow warning for the southern interior of BC

Brett Teigland, owner of The Barber Chair in downtown Kelowna, said he was concerned about the snow forecast as the city appears to be unable to handle the snow the city already has.

It also echoes many of the concerns of the Green Vanity owner.

“Customers can’t come down and can’t find a parking space,” said Teigland.

“The city should really take this stuff out. We’ll get 20 centimeters tomorrow, what do we do? “

On social media, a number of residents have voiced their concerns about snow on neighborhood streets, bike paths and accessibility issues for people with disabilities.

BC flooded again, in winter storm, extreme cold and snowfall warnings

Kelowna city declined an interview, saying officials were too busy preparing for the forecast snowfall for Wednesday night.

However, the city said in an email that snow removal efforts had been hampered by continued snowfall in the area.

“We are planning a full clean up after the last snow event happened and pulled through tonight. Since the December 25 event, there has not been a sufficient break in weather to allow a full cleanup, ”wrote Geert Bos, director of public works for the city of Kelowna.

“Normal weather patterns would have melted some of the snow or provided some clean-up options, but the current systems were far from normal.”

The City of Kelowna has banned parking on designated snow routes, roads in the Pandosy area, and downtown Kelowna as they prepare for the latest major snow event.
