Kelowna, BC, Lady arrested at Worth Village after COVID-19 masks battle

A 41-year-old woman from Kelowna, BC, was arrested Sunday after refusing to wear a mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at a Value Village store.

Mounties responded to an abuse complaint and caused a disruption to business on the 100 block of Aurora Crescent shortly after 4 p.m.

“Frontline officers visited the site, but despite numerous efforts by officials, the woman refused to leave the store,” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy on Monday.

She was taken into custody for allegedly causing interference and interfering with a police officer.

During the arrest, the woman allegedly hit the officers several times, yelled and refused to cooperate, the police said.

Last Thursday, the BC Provincial Health Commissioner ordered masks to be worn in all indoor public spaces. This is one of the many new restrictions to slow the second wave.

Corporations are responsible for asking customers to wear face covers or non-medical masks and will have to refuse service for non-compliance, police said.

It is the fourth anti-mask confrontation to be investigated by police in the Okanagan over the weekend, including incidents at the Orchard Park Mall in Kelowna, a coffee shop in Kelowna and a liquor store in Penticton.
