The three men wore dark jackets with yellow anti-COVID buttons on the front, West said.

The mask mandate is part of a broader range of new efforts to reduce community transmission of COVID-19 as Metro Vancouver records daily case numbers.

The mask order applies to all indoor public spaces and retail stores. There is an exception for children under two years of age and everyone who cannot put on or remove a mask themselves.

Across BC, businesses are being asked to support the province’s mask mandate by informing customers of the guidelines.

The province says patrons can be denied service if they do not wear a mask and if staff feel unsafe or threatened they should call the police.

“The majority of customers are willing to wear a mask. I’ve heard between 95 and 99 percent of customers [are] I have absolutely no problem with it. That being said … having a client, even if it’s only one on that day, can really affect overall business morale, “said Muriel Protzer, senior policy analyst for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Business groups urge the public to support local businesses by meeting the mask requirements.

“They went to extreme lengths and costs to keep the public safe. So our primary concern is to ensure that they continue to be able to run and support their families, ”said Dan Proulx, general manager of the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
