KELOWNA – Justin Brand is fed up with companies constantly being confronted with nightly burglaries. When he saw a man he said had come across surveillance footage from a car wash in Kelowna, he pulled out his cell phone and began recording.

Brand is a former manager at Sutherland Super Wash and is still in contact with the owners.

He says the store suffered an early morning break-in between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on July 16. The surveillance footage showed that about six thieves break the kiosk window and steal the store.

Brand estimates the car wash could have sustained $ 10,000 worth of damage.

He was having sandwiches with a friend later that day when they spotted a man he believes was caught video-monitoring the car wash.

They confronted the man and Brand began recording.

A heated exchange ensued when Brand and his friend found bolt cutters in the man’s pocket while the man denied being involved in the break-in. The man started when Brand and his friend called the police.

Brand followed the man through Orchard Park Mall, but lost sight of him as he crossed traffic on Highway 97.

He says he saw police cars swarming around the man, but he’s not sure he was arrested.

In pondering the situation, Brand is unsure whether confronting and recording a potential suspect was the best way to deal with the situation.

He doesn’t think every citizen should confront potential criminals, but he hopes his video will serve as a warning to law breakers that the people of Kelowna are fed up.

“The real point I did is that (criminals) are concerned about random guys with cameras, not just the police,” he said.
