Scammers exploit victims with false promises of romance or financial gain through investments
Scammers cheated on Vancouver victims of nearly $ 2 million last week with false promises of romance or financial gain.
Police are warning of a recent surge in scams related to transfers of funds in the form of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
“Predators often take advantage of two powerful human emotions: greed and love,” said Cst. Tania Visintin from the Vancouver Police Department.
“Victims are usually attracted with the idea that they are part of an opportunity to make money, or in other cases, doing a favor to a friend or romantic interest.”
Many are targeted through social media or dating websites. This type of crime cannot be reported due to the victim’s embarrassment.
Cryptocurrency fraud is hard to investigate, the chances of finding and identifying a suspect are slim, Visintin said.
Suspects are often based overseas and mask their identities through sophisticated, incomprehensible virtual private networks.
To report these matters to the police, call 604-717-4021 or remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
