The fire station in downtown Kelowna will undergo a major exterior renovation this year.

Work on the exterior wall work on the Grade I listed building, which has deteriorated over time, is expected to begin April 1st.

The upgrades were born from a 2014 assessment of the masonry conditions of the fire station, which was originally built in 1924.

Scott Bushell, Project Manager for Buildings and Structures, says the project involves realigning the failed mortar.

“Based on the vintage of the building since its construction in 1924, the mortar joints degrade over time due to weather and climatic conditions. This effectively removes and reinstall the existing grout,” Bushell said.

Work mainly focuses on the north and east facades of the 1924 building.

Some work will also take place on the south and west heights.

The city has allocated nearly $ 600,000 for the project.

The city council provided money for the work in the 2019 budget.
