Homeless, senior and starter housing is being built in North Okanagan

More and more homes are coming to Vernon at a time when more and more people are struggling to have a roof over their heads.

Three major developments are on the books, one for the most vulnerable in the city, one for the elderly, and one for single people.

McCullough Court is being expanded to include 48 new senior housing units. The Coldstream Avenue Apartment currently has 113 units. As part of the BC Housing project, the additional units will be built above the parking lot.

Further downtown, houses are being built for people struggling with homelessness. In the second phase of My Place on 35th Street, the existing building will be duplicated with a further 52 units.

For those looking to get into the housing market, 103 micro-suites are under construction on Lakeshore Road. The Vita development should be completed in spring 2021 and almost completely sold out. Only two of the units start at $ 191,900. The five-story building, valued at $ 7.7 million, is across from Lake Okanagan and features a gym and bicycle storage room.

“This is a big investment in the community,” said Kevin Poole, Vernon economic development and tourism manager.

There is also a proposed mixed use project by Avillia Developments on 16 acres at 7295 Okanagan Landing Road.
