UPDATE 6 p.m.
Traffic has returned to Glenmore Road after the fire damaged crane was dismantled at the Union Avenue intersection.
“The relevant evacuation order for 16 properties in the area has been lifted, and residents whose homes were not affected by the fire can return to their homes later that evening. The local emergency ordinance for the area has also been repealed, “Kelowna City said on Tuesday evening.
“The city thanks all parties involved in ensuring the safety of the public and the workers involved in the safe dismantling of the crane, as well as residents of the Glenmore borough and the wider community for their patience during the traffic disruption.”
ORIGINAL 12:45 p.m.
The burned-out construction site on Glenmore Road and Union Avenue was busy this morning as crews dismantle a large crane that was classified as dangerous after last week’s fire.
The situation has forced the evacuation of homes within 300 feet of the crane and the blocking of roads in the area.
Glenmore Road will remain closed between Cross and Scenic Road, and Union Road will be closed between Wyndham Crescent and Valley Road.
A worker at the construction site tells Castanet that the crane should be dismantled by the end of the day. The base of the crane was not as damaged by a fire as originally feared, said the worker.
Two more cranes were used for the complex project.
Castanet will be updated as more information becomes available.
