(UPDATE: July 13 @ 11:20 am) – The RCMP has confirmed that following the crane collapse on Monday in downtown Kelowna, four people are dead and another is believed to be dead.
Insp. Adam MacIntosh said three construction site workers died on the scene while another died in hospital from injuries.
The fifth person, believed to be dead by this point, was working in a nearby office building when the crane collapsed.
Unfortunately, the body remains buried in the rubble, as the site is currently not safe enough to be recovered.
“We believe that with the help of the engineers, we may be able to recover this person this afternoon,” said MacIntosh.
“Until we are able to secure this area and safely retrieve this person’s remains, this area will remain under a local emergency ordinance preventing anyone from going into this area.”
Once the area is secured, people are allowed to return home or collect their vehicles, but a local emergency ordinance prevents anyone from entering the area until then.
The RCMP is currently leading the investigation and assisting WorkSafeBC in gathering information, but the police will eventually turn the investigation over to WorkSafeBC in full.
MacIntosh also confirmed today that a person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the accident but has since been released.

The Mission Group has set up a grief counseling service for those affected by the incident, and there has been ongoing communication with all staff members who are currently in shock. Nothing was discussed about other expenses such as hospital bills and funeral services.
“The deceased worked on the construction site and I can confirm that they were not members of the Mission Group. That doesn’t change the fact that today people have died because of their work, they lost their lives, “said Frisen.
None of the local workers were unionized.
“Our entire team, the employees of the Mission Group and all of our sideline jobs are in shock. That doesn’t happen on any construction site. The characterization could be absolutely tragic.” said Frisen.
Labor Secretary Harry Bains spoke about the tragedy on the construction site. “All workers have the right to a safe and healthy workplace – even one injury or one death are too many. This is a heartbreaking reminder that we must strive to keep all workers safe to prevent incidents like this, ”said Bains.
