A fire in an apartment in Kelowna Wednesday evening left the residents of three units in the care of emergency services as Christmas approaches.

The Kelowna Fire Department dispatch center received a general fire alarm call from a surveillance company at around 10:00 p.m. reporting fire alarms in a residential building on the 500 block off Glenmore Road.

An emergency call reported smoke in one of the units on the third floor.

The crews gained access to the unit and discovered a fire in one of the rooms. The sprinkler system was able to suppress the fire before it could spread.

Firefighters were able to isolate the sprinkler, but caused water damage to the two units below and left all three units uninhabitable.

Eight adults, three children, a dog and three cats were brought into the care of the emergency services.

The fire is inherently random and no one was injured in the incident.

KFD responded with three engines, a ladder truck, a rescue unit and a command vehicle with a total of 15 employees.

The department recalls that candles can cause house fires. Keep them away from anything that can burn and blow them out when you leave the room.
