UPDATE 6:55 PM

Temporary housing arrangements will be made for 46 residents of Missionwood Retirement Home after a fire broke out on a balcony on the first floor this afternoon.

At around 3:15 p.m., Kelowna Fire Department received several reports of black smoke rising from a first-floor balcony at 1075 Barnes Road. The first officer to arrive said smoke was coming from a ground floor apartment at the back of the building. The flames had risen to the fourth floor on the outside of the building, but an aggressive attack by the fire service made it possible to extinguish the fire quickly.

The crews responded with four engines, a rescue unit, a cart and a command vehicle and twenty people. The fire broke through several windows in the building, causing internal damage on all floors and water damage on all affected floors from the use of sprinklers. One man was treated on site for smoke inhalation by the BCAS crew and the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
