An afternoon fire in a West Kelowna store was slowed down by staff before the professionals arrived and finished the work.

The West Kelowna Fire Department was called to Kelowna Electroplating on Ross Road at around 1:30 p.m. today after receiving reports of the fire.

Locomotive 32 from Lakeview Heights was the first to arrive and found billows of smoke from the front of the building.

“Crews entered the building through an open garage door and found a fire in a metal chip bunker,” said Brent Watson, assistant fire chief at WKFR.

“The staff had slowed the fire with a fire extinguisher before safely evacuating the building, and the West Kelowna crews were able to get the job done quickly with a single hose assembly.”

<p dir=Firefighters stay on site and ventilate the building to remove the heavy smoke that has built up inside.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported and the fire is not considered suspicious.
