Hot Halloween costumes

Downtown Kelowna’s city center has gotten a little spookier since Halloween Alley took over the former BC Tree Fruits building on Water Street and Queensway two weeks ago.

This is the first year the costume shop has set up shop downtown.

Halloween Alley usually opens in Orchard Park Mall.

Manager Deb Lawless says she saw a lot of new faces with the move.

“We had such a welcoming experience meeting lots of new people who have probably never been to Halloween Alley before,” she said. “We’re getting a lot of new walk-ins from people who live in the heart of the city center, that was great.”

Lawless says popular costumes this year are inspired by the latest movies, as well as some classics.

“Horror is a really big influence in Halloween. The movies play an important role in that. It’s pretty exciting to have our Michael Myers Halloween movie out in a few days, it was huge. We wear the mask, we that whole outfit. “

Harry Potter items are also flying off the shelves.

“Since the first year we recorded it, we’ve always started with a small selection and it just keeps growing.”

Make-up and gels are also high on the list of Halloween must-haves.

Despite the pandemic, Halloween Alley had one of the best fiscal years of 2020, and Lawless says she doesn’t expect anything else this year.

“Halloween is a time to celebrate and meet up with friends that you can. Our slogan is to celebrate life Halloween style. It just puts a smile on you and does it for all ages.”

Halloween Alley is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
