The two-day event over September 23-24 will feature a luncheon, a dinner, a pin ceremony for BC Hall of Fame members from the Okanagan, various workshops, and the annual general meeting. Lunch will pay tribute to defining moments in BC sports history while the dinner will honor the 2022 winners of the Eric Whitehead Service Awards.

This is the first time the event has happened in three years.

“It is part of our plan to move the Annual Summit and AGM around the province each year, and we’re grateful for the warm welcome and support of Patrick Kennedy and the team at the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame,” said Tom Mayenknecht , Chair of the BC Sports Hall of Fame. “We will build on this year’s Annual Summit in Kelowna and previous pilots in New Westminster and Surrey, to make the annual meeting an important coming-together of those who advocate for the promotion of sport history, heritage, and culture in British Columbia.”

More announcements of the events and the defining moments will be announced throughout the summer. There will also be a campaign to commemorate the most important moments in Central Okanagan sport history.

Woman arrested in 2020 Kelowna homicide

Marlena Isnardy, 33, has been charged with second-degree murder

A 33-year-old Kelowna woman has been arrested in connection with the 2020 death of Matthew Cholette.

Marlena Isnardy is now in custody, two years after the body of 27-year-old Cholette was found in a pool of blood outside a townhouse complex.

Police and BC Emergency Health Services responded to a disturbance at a residence in Black Mountain on Highway 33 on Dec. 13, 2020, and upon arrival discovered Cholette’s body.

A resident of the complex spoke to Black Press Media at the time and said he received a call from a neighbor that night complaining about excessive noise.

He went to the unit, where he found a trail of blood leading through the house to the driveway, where he found the body lying in a pool of blood.

A 32-year-old woman was arrested at the scene, but was released shortly after.

Charges of second-degree murder were approved against Isnardy on Feb. 11, 2022.

Hockey is a funny game. Players can end up in cities they never imagined and become friends with people they never thought of. And sometimes, even early in their careers, brothers can end up playing in the same interchangeable communities at the same time. That’s been the case this season for Tyler and Andrew Cristall.

“It’s awesome,” said Tyler, “every time we have an off day and [he] has a game, I get to go watch and he does the same. It’s good support for each other.”

“It’s awesome that we’re both so close to each other,” said Andrew. “It’s nice to have my brother here and we’re both playing pretty well so it’s going really good so far.”

The brothers from Vancouver both ended up in Kelowna just by chance. Tyler was acquired by the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warriors in late 2019 from the Chilliwack Chiefs, while Andrew was drafted eighth overall in the first round of the 2020 WHL draft by the Kelowna Rockets.

For the brothers, they never imagined having the opportunity to play for teams in such close proximity to one another.

“It’s pretty cool obviously,” said Tyler. “[I] hadn’t really thought about it until it happened when he got drafted to Kelowna but it’s a blessing in disguise.”

“He used to be in Chilliwack and got traded out to West Kelowna and at the draft, I got picked by Kelowna so I guess it’s a little bit of a coincidence but I’m glad it worked out that way,” said Andrew. “As brothers, you dream of playing together I guess and it’s pretty cool that we’re so close, I go to his games all the time, he comes to mine so it’s been really good that way.”

On top of their busy hockey schedules and schoolwork, both brothers make time to get together for lunch or dinner a couple of times a month. And being from Vancouver, just a four-to-five hour drive away, their parents come up to the Okanagan at least once a month to watch their boys play.

Both have had great success this season on the ice and they know that good things come to those who work hard.

“I think I’ve been playing the right way, playing good defensively, especially in the playoffs,” Tyler said. “When you play the right way, you get goals and you get rewarded so I just think if you don’t focus about points and just focus on playing the right way you’ll get rewarded.”

“I think I’ve been put in a really good opportunity,” said Andrew. “I think I’ve been playing with a lot of confidence so I think that’s helped me throughout the year. [I’ve been] staying high through the ups and downs and playing my game.”

In 49 regular season games, Tyler led the Warriors with 30 goals this season and added 27 assists. And the scoring touch hasn’t stopped in the playoffs as he’s tied for the team-lead with 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 10 games.

Andrew scored 28 goals for the Rockets this season, breaking the team record for most goals by a 16-year-old. He also tied the team’s regular-season record for points by a 16-year-old with 69 points in 61 games.

Both brothers each finished their regular seasons with five game-winning goals.

After spending the last nine months in Kelowna, the seasons are coming down to the wire for both the brothers as they battle in the playoffs for their respective teams. Tyler and the Warriors are preparing to face the Penticton Vees in the Interior Conference finals while Andrew and the Rockets are down 2-0 in their first-round series against the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Andrew and the Rockets welcome Seattle to Prospera Place tonight (April 26) for game three with puck drop at 7:05 pm Tyler and the Warriors open their series on Friday, April 29 in Penticton.

Tyler has committed to going to school and playing NCAA division one hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York in the fall. Barring any changes, Andrew will return to the Rockets in the fall and is NHL draft-eligible for 2023.

Every morning outreach workers bring breakfast items to the outdoor sheltering site in downtown Kelowna, BC’s north end.

“Coffee, oatmeal and juice,” said Josh Heinitz, an outreach worker with the Gospel Mission.

But these days, the outreach teams are bringing a lot more than just a bite to eat.

“Blankets, sleeping bags and anything that kind of keeps people warm,” Heinitz told Global News. “We’ve been giving out a lot of those things. As you know, it’s been very cold lately, so we’ve been having very high demand for sleeping bags and for blankets.”

A winter shelter has not yet opened this season and the outlook for one is bleak.

Not only has a suitable site not been secured but staffing shortages are also making it hard to find workers to staff existing shelters.

There are about 150 people living on the streets, many of them at the outdoor sheltering site along the Okanagan Rail Trail.

One of the people living outdoors is Nick Gagnon.

He said he appreciates the items he’s given to help manage in the cold conditions.

“Socks, socks are a big one,” Gagnon said. “The sock game is the most important part of the game when it comes to staying outside … dry feet, stay warm.”

Socks and other donations have been pouring in from the community in recent days.

The Gospel Mission’s executive director credits Global Okanagan News and a story aired last week for the overwhelming response from residents wanting to help those out on the streets.

“Shortly after the news piece went out last week asking for donations, I got a message from my front-line team going, ‘Carmen, did you make a shout-out for donations because we’re busting at the seams,’” executive Director Carmen Rempel said. “We had so many people come down, make donations right to our Lyon shelter and to our thrift store. We had to fill up the rafters with all of the donations.”

Rempel said she’s extremely grateful to the community and for the support for those in need.

“I would just like to thank the community for that outpouring of compassion,” she said. “It means a lot for people who are on the street and it means a lot for all of us who are engaged in this work every day.”

Shelter and service providers, including the Gospel Mission, are set to meet with Kelowna’s new mayor, Tom Dyas, on Tuesday to address the homelessness crisis and the lack of a winter shelter.

They’ll also be discussing long-term solutions so that the dire situation doesn’t continue to repeat itself every year.

“It’s a really good opportunity for us to explain what gets in the way and the barriers that we face to winter shelter and the big message that our group is bringing forward is that we really need to be working smarter, not harder,” Rempel said . “Temporary emergency shelters aren’t the answer to homelessness and it’s becoming unsustainable to keep popping them up every winter.”

About two weeks ago, six shelter providers across the Southern Interior penned a strongly worded letter to decision-makers pleading their case that it’s more supportive housing that’s needed, not emergency shelters.

The situation is not isolated to Kelowna.

The urgency exists across the Okanagan Valley and BC

In Penticton, it’s estimated 80 people are living outside. In Vernon, that number is around 100.

“It’s hard. It is hard to see because you know they just have nowhere to go,” said Heinitz. “So it’s, it’s not easy to see for sure.”

While thankful for the donations it has already received, the Gospel Mission said the need is ongoing and it will continue to accept donations to help people cope during the winter season.

“We need warm winter socks, mittens, jackets and boots are the top things that we’re constantly in need of as well as men’s pants,” Rempel said.

Kelowna Home Show returns to Prospera Place

The event runs on Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8

The Kelowna Spring Home Show returned this weekend to Prospera Place.

The event featured many different items to brighten up one’s yard space from patio furniture to fake plants, water displays, and even hot tubs.

With people looking for new spring and summer activities to try, electronic bikes are becoming very popular. They were available along with many other items to help one get active.

The main area of ​​Prospera Place is where the majority of companies were with their items but there were more companies set up in parts of the concourse.

Many companies also offered contests for a chance to win anything from televisions to pieces of furniture.

The home show is open until 6 pm tonight (May 7). The event will be on again tomorrow (Sunday, May 8), perfect to go pick something up for Mother’s Day. It is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm

King Taps construction is well underway in Kelowna.

Media were invited to tour the site Thursday and get a sneak peak at what the finished restaurant will look like.

Turning thorns to crowns, King Taps refurbishing the iconic Rose’s Pub on Water Street.

Regional Manager Thomas Beetlestone said they don’t yet have an opening day.

“Demolition actually started back in 2019, but obviously with the pandemic everything got put on pause for a while there. So, we started back up probably late last year and working through the early part of this year, fingers crossed we’re going to be able to open in the near future.”

The Kelowna restaurant has the same owners as Cactus Club and is the second of the King Taps locations, the first being in Toronto.

Regional Chef James Bunting said this location is much larger. They are looking to hire about 80 kitchen staff and approximately another 150 for front of house.

As for the menu, it will feature many local wines and beers, and a top menu item will be pizza.

“We’ve got two pizza masters,” Bunting said. “They come from Italy and what’s really great about these is that they’re built for speed. So, they have the ability to retain the heat in it and rebound up to proper temperatures very quickly which gives us the opportunity to be able to cook great tasting pizzas very quickly and be able to serve as many guests as possible.”

“We are just really excited for this opportunity to show King Taps here in BC,” said Beetlestone. “Kelowna is our first location here in the province. It’s pretty special. We’re really excited to become a national brand.”

Beetlestone noted they are still hiring and anyone interested should go to their website to apply.
