Environmental rally outside Kelowna City Hall

Extinction Rebellion holds protests every Friday to encourage the city to do more against climate change

A small group of protesters from Extinction Rebellion and Climate Save Kelowna held a rally outside Kelowna City Hall on January 22nd.

The environmental groups have been holding small protests every Friday since autumn to encourage elected officials to do more to combat climate change.

In the fall, hundreds of people attended a series of large protests in Kelowna and across BC as part of a series of global protests. Students from the University of British Columbia at Okanagan also protested and parts of Water Street were temporarily closed during a protest.

“We are protesting global warming and we are making sure that City Hall actually takes action, addresses the situation and declares a climate emergency,” said Russell Mellaleiu, a protester with Extinction Rebellion.

Extinction Rebellion urges the City of Kelowna to implement various climate protection initiatives, including:

  • Creation of a climate emergency law
  • Implementation of a task force and attempt to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions to 100 percent by 2030
  • Commitment to Rapid Integration of Green Energy and Net Zero Infrastructure in Kelowna
  • Elimination of single-use plastic bags

The city of Kelowna approved a climate protection plan in 2018 that includes 48 measures to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent from 2007 to 2033.

Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses nonviolent civil disobedience to stop mass extinction and minimize the risk of social collapse.
