The Kelowna Fire Department said electric scooters were responsible for a smoky business fire on Wednesday morning.
Brown smoke rose from a shop at Moss Court in 1974 after firefighters opened a bay door in the complex.
“We really didn’t know what was burning when we got there,” said train captain John Kelly, “because the deal was closed.”
“But we forced entry into the building and discovered that it was a battery-operated scooter rental company. It looks like one of the scooters is overloaded or overheated and has started a fire. “

Kelly said the fire caused a lot of smoke, but the fire was limited to the scooters and a small section of a nearby wall.

The cause of the fire was believed to be electrical and several scooters were involved.

A witness, Chad Kyllo, said he was working on the second floor of the complex on the upper floor of the locked store on the ground floor when an employee smelled electrical smoke.
“We walked around the office a bit to find it,” Kyllo told Global News. “And then we all went and called the fire department.”

Four fire trucks and 18 firefighters were on site, which Kelly said was a standard reaction when smoke was exposed in a building.

“We send everything we have [to] it first, ”said Kelly.
“But when we got there and got involved, everything was done.”
