The Kelowna Fire Department had to act quickly on Sunday morning when it came to a dangerous dumpster fire in the downtown area.

Train captain Scott Clarke said the department responded shortly before 4 p.m. to reports of a burning garbage can that was exposed to a shop on the 1500 block of Pandosy Street.

The first arriving crews found the fire in an alley and put it out. Unfortunately, the fire had spread into the building, so the incident had to be expanded into a structural fire.

After entering the building, firefighters put out the flames.

Fortunately, no one was in the store at the time of the incident. The structure was only slightly damaged.

At this point, the fire was classified as suspicious and is being investigated by the RCMP and the department. A total of three engines, a rescue unit, a ladder truck, a command unit, a security unit, RCMP, Fortis workers and 16 firefighters responded to the incident.
