This week’s column is dedicated to longtime educator Murli Pendharkar. The Pendharkars are long-time friends of the DeHarts and we have always valued Murli’s wisdom and kindness. My husband Chris’ fondest memories of Murli are when he took Chris and other Rotarians on a trip to India to see the Rotary Water Project. I was proud to be on the council when Murli received the prestigious Anita Tozer Memorial Award. Personal condolences to Sudha, Milind, Madhuri, the entire Pendharkar family, along with Murli’s many friends and colleagues.
Local authors Paul and Kirsten Moxness wrote a new book, Spin the Bottle Service – Hospitality in the Age of AI.
It’s a must have for anyone working in the hospitality industry or considering a career and coming out at the perfect time as the travel and tourism industry reopens. The book has already received rave reviews from around the world, including the International University of Monaco where it is used in their luxury hotel management program. Paul grew up in Kelowna, graduated from KSS in 1978 and spent 40 years in Europe. He had a career from basement to boardroom at the Radisson Hotel Group. Kirsten is from Denmark, a pioneer in the massage and wellness-at-work movement. She ran her own business in her home country for 14 years and worked in a prestigious spa in Brussels. Her book is a collection of personal experiences from her travels around the world, including Kelowna. The Jealous Fruits retail store is now open at the company’s packaging facility on 7980 Highway 97 between Kelowna and Lake Country, seven days a week. Their Farmgate location is also open daily in East Kelowna at 3700 Pooley Rd. KF Aerospace has announced a top-level reorganization as the company prepares for a year of recovery in the aerospace industry and continued growth in its cargo, leasing and defense support services division. President, Tracy Medve will take on the additional role of Chief Executive Officer from KF founder Barry Lapointe, who will remain Chairman of the Board of Directors. Tracy will work for the entire KF Capital Ltd. be responsible, including SkyAlyne, the KF Foundation and KF’s international leasing business. Former vice president of maintenance and engineering Gregg Evjen was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Gregg has spent his entire professional career at KF Aerospace, where he began as an engineer over 31 years ago. The Vice President of Corporate Services, Grant Stevens, has also been promoted to Chief Corporate Services Officer of the KF Operating Group of Companies.
Secure-Rite Mobile Storage, specialist in mobile storage and customer-specific structures with five locations in Western Canada, has acquired Cratex Container Sales and Rentals, a large provider of shipping containers in Delta. This acquisition will cement Secure-Rite’s recent entry into the Vancouver market. After 16 years of success at locations in the Kelowna, Penticton Vernon and Calgary markets, owner and president of Secure-Rite Mobile Storage Lucas Griffin opened the gates to a fifth location in Surrey in November 2020.
Cruzwear’s second location is now officially open at 1176 Ellis St. on the new One Water Street development. Owned and operated by Sheri Rothwell, the shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Harbor Air and Eldorado Resort have partnered to provide weekly round-trip flights from downtown Vancouver to the Eldorado Marina Dock. This new air service, which will begin flights on July 23, provides another seamless way for people to get back and forth between the lower mainland and the Okanagan, with flight time being just over an hour. Greg McDougall is the CEO of Harbor Air and Mark Jeanes is the General Manager of the Eldorado Resort.
Can someone help? On Wednesday, July 7th, around 3 p.m., a friend’s vehicle was hit from the side in an accident with a hit-and-run by a truck. The damage was great, but luckily she wasn’t seriously injured. This was on Highway 97 in the northbound lane just past the Boucherie Road intersection in West Kelowna. If anyone witnessed this accident and has information or possibly footage on their dashcam, it would be grateful. Contact the West Kelowna RCMP. The file number is # 2021-42668.
The Rotary Club Kelowna Sunrise The 6th annual community raffle was initiated by the Rotary Club Kelowna Sunrise with a drawing date of September 30, 2021. The main sponsor this year will be Phase II of the Youth Recovery House run by The. Bridge Youth and Family Services is operated. The raffle prizes total $ 8,700 and tickets are only $ 5 each. Seven charities in BC Southern Interior received the Sustainable Recovery Grant in 2021, a multi-year collaboration between local donors including United Way BC – Southern Interior Region, Interior Savings, Community Foundation of the North Okanagan, Community Foundation of the South Okanagan Similkameen and Valley First, a division of the First West Credit Union. The recipients were Canadian Mental Health Association, Vernon and District; Clubhouse childcare center; Combine counseling & therapy; Grist mill; IndigenEYEZ kinSHIFT; Kelowna Gospel Mission and Penticton Resource Recovery Society (Discovery House).
