The construction of a new roundabout means motorists will have to avoid the intersection of Carrington and Gellatly Streets in West Kelowna for the next 10 weeks.

Work on a new roundabout at the intersection is expected to begin next Monday, April 19.

This means that the intersection is closed on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the duration of the work.

While detours are being set up for drivers, pedestrian access remains. Cyclists are encouraged to either take the same detours as car traffic or to get off and use the sidewalks through the construction site.

The area is open to traffic in the evenings, on weekends and on public holidays.

Shops in the area will also remain open.

The $ 1.32 million intersection project also includes a proposed three-meter-wide, multipurpose paved path between Witt and Boucherie Roads to create a vital link between Westbank Center and the waterfront, as well as minor improvements to the Smith Bach storm work.

While the intersection itself is expected to be closed for around 10 weeks, the entire project won’t be completed until September.
