On their way home they made a pit stop in Hanna, Alta. to get fuel and stretch, just 80 kilometers from the site of a collision with 10 vehicles.

RCMP said the crash occurred between Chinook and Cereal, east of Calgary. Three semi-trailers and seven vehicles were involved in the accident.

According to the police, one of the semi-trailers with fuel caught fire, causing several vehicles to catch fire. Another truck was loaded with butane.

Ten people were injured, two of them life-threatening. Unfortunately, three people were killed.

Germo described how they saw smoke as they approached the area, but assumed it was a grass fire in front of them. Then they came across flashing lights and sirens.

He said that a police officer ran in the middle of the street and asked them to get out.

The couple were sent to a rural back road around the crime scene, and from there they could see a tanker truck and burned vehicles through the smoke.

“It was kind of a disgusting kind of empty feeling when you realized that – yes – these are people who just spend their day traveling somewhere,” said Germo.

“It looked like a bomb went off because there were these burned-out vehicles and it was very scary. The first thing you think of are these poor families. “

RCMP said the investigation into the collision is expected to be lengthy and likely to take several weeks.

The victim assistance supports those involved in the accident.
