Costco is nearing its controversial move to Kelowna.
More than a year after the plans for the new Costco site were published, requests to rededicate and amend the official community plan for the 6 acre property on the corner of Baron, Leckie and Springfield Streets will be included in the council next week.
The current location of the big box store on Highway 97 and Highway 33 has been open for nearly 30 years.
“During this time, and as the Kelowna population has grown significantly, business has grown busier in terms of membership and annual visits,” the city staff report said.
“Costco is proposing to move the existing operations to a larger location that will include both a gas bar and a larger warehouse so the business can continue to grow.”
Traffic, which has been one of the biggest public concerns regarding the project since it was announced, doesn’t play a role, according to city officials.
“The proposed new Costco will be a major traffic generator and regional destination, although the existing location, which is approximately 770m to the northeast, is generally in the same neighborhood and the proposal as such does not represent a significant deviation in terms of general transport patterns or Effects on the network. “
Costco has agreed to fund several road improvement projects in the area, including Leckie, Springfield, and Highway 97.
If the council gives the green light on Monday, the project will be postponed to a public hearing.
