Fired for Alberta comments

A Kelowna real estate agent was reportedly sacked for controversial comments he made on Facebook about Albertans.

Screenshots of Ben Houghton’s profile include a post that says, “Alberta those baby cribs … don’t worry Alberta, your greed will soon be back in full swing.”

To which Albertan Ryan Bayrack replied, “I will make sure that none of our provinces buy houses in the Okanagan from you.”

Century 21 Assurance Realty Ltd responded with a Facebook post saying that Houghton is no longer registered as a broker with the company.

“Yesterday, Ben Houghton, a broker for our firm, made negative comments on Albertans,” the post said. “We wholeheartedly disagree with the statements made about our Canadian compatriots.”

“Alberta was an economic engine for our country. We sympathize with the Albertans regarding the current economic climate and appreciate their perspective.”

“Our broker suspended Mr. Houghton and he is no longer a registered broker with our company.”

Castanet has contacted Century 21 for comment.
