WEST KELOWNA – The lights have been on on the West Kelowna sports fields since yesterday.
The switches were turned on last night at a ceremony on April 21st during a small baseball game by West Kelowna Diamonbacks.
Smaller baseball, soccer and football clubs have been requesting the lights on the fields for several years.
A media release said the projects were “unaffordable due to other infrastructure priorities in West Kelowna.”
The sports field lighting was the result of the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Project, funded by the Canadian government and the City of West Kelowna.
In recognition of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the Canadian government invested in projects to improve existing parks and facilities across the country. The city of West Kelowna received USD 337,750 upon successful application.
These lights mean that the use of the fields can be increased by hours each day in spring and autumn when there are fewer hours of daylight.
The Lower Boucherie Ball Field is the home field of the West Kelowna Minor Baseball Diamondbacks. The field is larger than West Kelowna’s premier baseball, fastball, softball and slo-pitch facilities. Rosewood Sports Field is an important game, practice and tournament facility for Westside Youth Soccer and an important practice facility for Westside Minor Football.
“These fields are more than just green spaces,” said Navdeep Bains, Minister for Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister for Economic Diversification of the West in Canada. “They help bring people together in leisure and relaxation. The new lights extend the useful life of these fields and give all members of the community more time to play. ”
