As COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the province, the BC Center for Disease Control (BCCDC) has started posting local case numbers.
The BCCDC announced that local health department numbers will be updated weekly.
In internal health, the total number of cases is 2,502, of which 679 are currently active and isolated. In the central Okanagan, which includes Kelowna, West Kelowna, West Bank First Nation, Peachland and Lake Country, 314 cases of the virus were diagnosed between November 29 and December 5.
Over the same period, Penticton recorded 50 cases and Vernon reported 21, meaning cases in the central Okanagan are increasing faster than other areas in the valley.
While cases continue to rise in the central Okanagan – and overall internal health – this is not the worst-case scenario in the province. Fraser Health has reported a total of 25,398 cases, of which 7,043 are currently active. There are a total of 10,117 cases in Vancouver Coastal Health, of which 1,236 are active and isolated.
Fraser Health has seen some of the highest case numbers in its local health regions. Between November 29 and December 5, Surrey reported 1,588 cases, Abbotsford came in 352, Delta came in 208, Langley had 157, and Chilliwack had logged 140.
Overall, deaths from the virus within Interior Health remain at six. Fraser Health has reported 328 deaths, followed by Vancouver Coastal Health with 236.
