According to Dr. Provincial health officer Bonnie Henry reported 546 new COVID-19 cases to BC on Thursday (Jan. 28).
It’s a dire long-term care situation with two new outbreaks – at Chilliwack’s Bradley Center and Concord by the Sea in White Rock. Both live in the Fraser Health area.
There were 12 reported deaths, 291 people in the hospital, 75 in the intensive care unit.
Of the new cases, 218 were discovered in the Fraser Health area, which has seen a significant decrease in infections over the past few weeks. There were 174 new cases in the Vancouver coastal region, 70 in internal health, 51 in northern health, and 30 on Vancouver Island.
Henry reiterated the importance of staying near home and spending time outdoors rather than traveling.
“This is necessary because we know COVID-19 can travel with us and we can just as easily bring it back on our return,” said Henry and Health Secretary Adrian Dix in a joint statement.
In recent weeks, BC has seen an increase in community clusters and corporate exposures, the ministry said.
“We’re reminding business owners that now is not the time to shake things up. WorkSafeBC and environmental health teams have stepped up inspections and will take all necessary steps to keep communities safe, including closing a business if necessary. “
