The downward trend in the number of property crimes seen in Kelowna last year continued into the first three months of 2021.

In their first quarterly report for 2021, Supt. Kara Triance says property crime has decreased by 10 percent compared to 2020.

The numbers for the first quarter of 2020 were up year-over-year, but those numbers were found to have declined in March last year.

Overall, property crime fell by 16 percent last year.

In the first three months of 2021, 2,424 property crime cases were reported, compared with 2,708 the previous year.

Breaking in and entering residential buildings decreased by more than 40 percent, while shoplifting fell nearly 24 percent.

While property crime declined across the board, bicycle theft rose 17 percent. In the first three months of 2021, 96 bicycle thefts were reported, compared to 82 in the previous year.

The number of calls for mental illness increased nine percent, while the number of drug overdoses rose from 17 in the first three months of 2020 to 30 this year.

The number of personal offenses decreased negligibly, while the cases of domestic violence, sexual assault and sexual offenses were identical to the previous year. Both robberies and gun assault cases fell by 36 percent and 38 percent, respectively.
