A student or employee at Kelowna Secondary School has tested positive for COVID-19 and is self-isolating at home.
Interior Health will then conduct a contact trace to identify those who may have been exposed to the virus as a result of the confirmed case.
“The safety and well-being of students, families and employees remain our top priorities,” Central Okanagan Public Schools said in a press release on Monday morning.
“(We) will continue to implement strict health and safety protocols and procedures in place so that students and staff can continue to go to school as safely as possible,” the press release said.
“Central Okanagan Public Schools will continue to work closely with Interior Health to determine if additional action is required and to support ongoing communication with the KSS community,” the press release said.
COVID-19 exposure at KSS is said to have occurred on October 19, 20 and 21 on the Interior Health website. Public health does not know if the person is a student or a teacher when there are some affected people in a school.
It is the first reported exposure to COVID-19 at a Kelowna public school. A French-speaking school, ecole de L’Anse-sable, had 11 positive cases of the disease in staff and students, and an additional 160 people were connected to the school in self-isolation.
This school is now closed until at least November 4th.
KSS is the largest school in Central Okanagan. 1,869 students are enrolled this fall. It is intended to be of maximum capacity and a public consultation process is underway to determine how or if the school could be expanded.
