Virus kills 10 in the IH region

A COVID-19 outbreak at the Heritage Retirement Residence in West Kelowna has grown to 30 cases and one death.

Ten people have died from COVID-19 in interior BC in the past five days as multiple outbreaks in retirement homes worsen.

There were four more deaths on Tuesday at the McKinney Place nursing home in Oliver, where the virus has now killed 12 people after infecting 54 residents and 21 employees, according to Interior Health.

An outbreak at the Heritage Retirement Residence in West Kelowna, which now has up to 25 residents and five employees, has also resulted in another death.

Another death was recorded in the Village of the station’s Penticton nursing home, where five residents and four employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Interior Health has now also confirmed a second fatality at the Mountainview Village nursing home in Kelowna, where cases have been recorded in eight residents and eight employees.

There have been three more COVID-19 deaths in the community in the past five days, bringing the death toll from IH to 28.

“Our condolences go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives to COVID-19 and the caregivers who cared for them,” said Susan Brown, President and CEO of Interior Health.

“As outbreaks continue to occur in long-term care facilities, it again shows how deadly this virus can be, especially to our elders. I encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. This is why it is so important that each of us continue to strictly follow public health guidelines that we know to stop the spread of COVID-19. “

The Noric House long-term care outbreak in Vernon remains at six cases: five residents and one employee.

There are 623 active cases of COVID-19 across the IH region.
