After a busy summer, Kelowna tells RCMP that they have seen an increase in theft and shoplifting, as well as break-ins and break-ins in the city’s stores.

Superintendent Kara Trianace explains that the department is now working to respond effectively by changing the way the Kelowna RCMP is addressing this surge and preventing future crimes.

“There is still a lot to be done across the community to ensure that we are taking all steps to prevent criminals from operating here, and we are committed to these continuing efforts,” says Supt. Trianz.

Triance also points out that this rise in crime may be related to more complex social issues.

“The Kelowna RCMP is committed to our continued working with our partners, including the City of Kelowna, Home Health and the Department of Justice, to address these concerns,” she said.

<p dir=The Community Safety Unit and frontline officers have increased their vehicle, foot, and bicycle patrols in busy downtown and on Harvey Avenue.

The road police teams have also been restructured into two larger teams.

The Target Team will oversee property crime, car theft and productive criminals, while the Drugs and Organized Crime Department will keep an eye on drug trafficking and organized crime.

The two teams will start operations on Monday, September 27th.

“This change refines the overall mandate of our teams and eliminates duplication,” said Insp. Beth McAndie, investigative officer.

“By having focused and larger teams, we can address this upward trend in property crime in Kelowna more effectively.”
