There is a lot of activity on the construction site for the new Costco on Leckie and Springfield streets.
Much of the groundwork is almost complete and the building is under construction, but it has been a long road for some people who live nearby.
They are grappling with constant construction noise, dust, and lately disruption along the road that has prevented some people from entering and leaving their homes.
The work blocked both entrances to Dilworth Green at 1765 Leckie Road on the morning of August 17, and the crews also tore open some of the landscaping belonging to the complex.
“Well, they cut almost a quarter of the front of the bushes, completely sheared them off so they’re completely bare,” said Graeme Dunsford, president of the Dilworth Green Layers.
“And then of course we have irrigation pipes that cross because there was grass on the side of the road. So all of our irrigation lines were pulled out, which had to be capped at the crossing points, but the biggest concern is really the bushes. “
The Strata Council has reached out to Kelowna City Council for help.
“During both council meetings with the developer, they said they would make good community partners and consult with residents in the neighborhood, and we had no consultation before doing this work in front of our complex.”
Dunsford says they struggled to find the prime contractor for the project, but CGL Contracting was “really responsive and came up with some options and ideas for us”.
“So I sent the letter to the mayor and council asking for help so we can try to get an answer and work with us to resolve the problem.”
You will also keep an eye on traffic jams, especially when a Costco gas station is operating. Despite the disruptions, Dunsford is not against the new retail development. He looks forward to going across the street in the morning to pick up his purchases.
The new Costco should be ready for buyers by the end of this year.
Costco and its contractor did not respond to requests for comment.
