KELOWNA, BC – Evacuation orders were lifted for all buildings except one in Kelowna, BC as crews dismantled the remains of a crane that collapsed and killed five people.

Residents and businesses can return at six addresses, according to a statement from Central Okanagan Emergency Operations.

Civil engineers and utility inspectors are said to have completed infrastructure and safety inspections, but property owners are encouraged to conduct their own checks to ensure customers and residents are safe when they return.

The statement said that another building directly across from the site the crane fell on continues to be evacuated as health and safety issues are resolved.

Four construction workers died when the arm of a crane fell about 25 floors last week while it was being dismantled, while a fifth man was killed when the rubble destroyed part of a neighboring building where it worked.

The BC Coroners Service, RCMP and WorkSafeBC, the provincial safety agency for workers, are investigating these deaths.
