Eighth death in the nursing home

Another person has died in the COVID-19 outbreak at the Spring Valley long-term care home in Kelowna.
Interior Health announced an eighth nursing home death on Thursday. Additionally, two other residents at the facility tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases there to 35 residents and 12 employees / others.
This new death comes after the facility’s seventh death was announced on Wednesday.
The local death was one of three new COVID-related deaths across BC announced on Thursday. To date, there have been 1,661 COVID-related deaths in BC, including 146 domestic ones.
Despite the increasing deaths at the facility, Interior Health’s chief medical health officer Dr. Albert de Villiers that the majority of residents and staff there had been vaccinated and that most of the cases were asymptomatic.
After declaring the COVID-19 outbreak at Sandalwood Retirement Resort in Kelowna last weekend and the outbreak at Keremeos’ Orchard Haven on Thursday, the Spring Valley outbreak remains the only nursing home outbreak inside.
There are three other COVID-19 outbreaks in senior facilities in the rest of the province.
There are 487 active COVID cases inland. Twenty of these people are currently in the hospital, 13 of whom are being treated in the intensive care unit.
