A Kelowna-based custom home builder cleared a national quality housing competition for its Vernon and Kelowna homes earlier this month.

Frame Custom Homes was founded in 2006 and won the Grand Prize and the Design Excellence Award at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association digital gala on May 7th – based on the cumulative results in the New Home and Home Spaces categories.

“We’re pretty excited, of course,” said owner Bill Frame. “It’s great to be recognized for your work by your colleagues.”

Frame and his team also won “Best Detached Custom Home 4.01 to 5,000 square feet” for the Overlook in Kelowna and “Best Detached Custom Home over 5,000 square feet” for Lakeside Haven in Vernon.

The win was even sweeter, Frame said, as a smaller builder from Okanagan beat national rivals as well as national rivals in the major city centers.

“It really reflects what we do at the Okanagan,” he said. “We are leaders. We have many options here that are in keeping with the Okanagan lifestyle, and it seems that everyone I build for will certainly want to incorporate this design philosophy. “

This is exactly what the Foots wanted in their lakeside retreat on Okanagan Landing Road.

Ray and Kathy Foot said they loved the national recognition of Lakeside Haven, the four bed, six bath home complete with an elevator, pool, and putting green.

“We’re very excited for our builder,” said Kathy. “We think very highly of him.”

This wasn’t the first time the Foot family had built their own house. The family has lived and built in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Calgary.

And while Vernon’s new masterpiece overlooking Okanagan Lake isn’t her primary residence, it is her forever home.

“We built this house for our family,” said Kathy, noting that her children live in Vancouver and her 91-year-old mother lives in Calgary. “This is a real meeting place for our family.”

Vernon was an easy choice for the family who spent many summers in the area.

“When we talked to our kids about where to build, there was no hesitation: Vernon,” said Ray. “This is our story, we love it. We have focused our attention on that. “

The duo brought many of their successes from their native Arizona to the design table, particularly the outdoor living space, which was honored in a provincial competition.

“One thing we really appreciated about Bill is his attention to detail,” said Kathy. “If we wanted something, he made it.”

That’s one of the advantages of a smaller construction company, Frame said. The size allows employees to develop a more intimate relationship with customers.

“In doing so, we get to know them, understand them and help them ultimately achieve their dream,” he said. “When you give people a house and they are speechless and emotional, you can participate.”

“Ultimately, that’s the most important thing: the relationships we build with our customers.”
