Burglar suspect arrested on ceiling of West Kelowna retailer

A Break and Enter suspect is now facing a number of potential charges after being found by police who appeared to be hiding in the ceiling of a local shop in the early hours of Sunday morning in West Kelowna.

On September 9, 2018, just minutes before 2:30 a.m., West Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a commercial alert and reports from the alert company of a possible disruption and ongoing entry into a store on the 3000 block of Louie Ride.

RCMP arrived at the scene and discovered a broken glass door that led to an empty store that was next to the business police who were responding.

A fence was built around the commercial complex and the police carried out an internal search. “Inside, the investigators discovered damage to the interior walls that separated the vacant shop and the business of the reported alarm,” says RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

RCMP eventually located the break-in suspect, a 31-year-old man from West Kelowna, who was hiding in the ceiling connecting the two stores. He was arrested without incident, held in police custody and is now facing a possible criminal complaint.

“Police also allege that the suspect and anyone believed to be associated with him made multiple attempts to lure our officers away from the scene,” added Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “As a result, the suspect and those people identified by officers at the scene could face additional criminal proceedings.”
