3 recent deaths in the nursing home

Three people connected to the Spring Valley long-term care home in Kelowna recently died of COVID-19 as cases at the facility continue to increase.

Interior Health declared a COVID-19 outbreak at the long-term care home on April 28 after a resident and employee tested positive for the virus.

In the past eight days, the outbreak has grown to 22 residents and 10 staff / others. IH has not provided any information on what the term “other” refers to.

As of Thursday, three people had died of Covid-19 in the nursing home.

Last Friday, IH’s Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Albert de Villiers that most positive outbreak tests in Kelowna’s nursing homes were asymptomatic after the majority of residents and staff at all nursing homes in BC were vaccinated against COVID-19 earlier this year.

IH did not disclose whether the people who recently died in Spring Valley were vaccinated.

There’s also an active outbreak at Sandalwood Retirement Resort in Kelowna, where 26 residents and two employees tested positive. A single person in this facility has also died from the virus.
