A resident of a Kelowna nursing home was diagnosed with COVID-19, a first for the Interior Health region.

An employee and long-term care resident at the nursing home tested positive for COVID-19, according to a letter to Good Samaritan Mountainview Village Independent Living residents.

“I want to assure you that we are working closely with Interior Health and have implemented outbreak protocols,” said a letter from Scott Fielding’s vice president to residents. “There will also be improved screening of residents and employees, including temperature checks.”

While COVID-19 numbers in the central Okanagan have risen steadily and potential exposures have occurred in some nursing homes, residents of these facilities have not been affected until this weekend.

Interior Health declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Mountainview Village long-term care home on Monday afternoon.

In a press release, IH said the outbreak applies to both east and west units on the second floor.

“A staff member and resident on the second floor have tested positive for COVID-19. Staff who are in close contact with these people are in self-isolation and are monitoring symptoms. IH will continue to monitor the situation while additional infection controls are carried out for preventive measures “said the press release from IH.

On Friday, IH reported a total of 47 new cases in one day overnight, a total of 1,538 since the pandemic began.

They said 399 cases are active and isolated while 10 people are in the hospital.
