The avalanche blocked Highway 1 near Revelstoke yesterday

Highway 1 over Rogers Pass was closed for most of the day

Highway 1 over the Rogers Pass was mostly closed yesterday due to avalanche control.

An avalanche blocked the highway at one of the five snow sheds that cover the road over the pass.

According to the Parks Canada weather station at Rogers Pass, the area received more than 8 inches of snow this past weekend.

CLOSED – # BCHwy1 – The highway is closed in BOTH directions due to an avalanche in Glacier National Park between #RevelstokeBC and #GoldenBC.

At 1,315 meters, the snow cover is 200 cm.

According to DriveBC, the driving conditions are muddy with a slippery section.

Avalanche control work is planned in Yoho National Park from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (MDT). The road will be closed during this time.

Environment Canada says the rain is expected to continue in Revelstoke today, with snow depths rising to 1,000 meters by the afternoon.

Tonight there is a chance to snow on the valley floor in Revelstoke.

Highway 1 was closed yesterday at around 1 p.m. and only reopened at 2:40 a.m. today.
