With a 4-2 win at Prospera Place on Saturday night, the Portland Winterhawks have won a weekend series with two games with the Kelowna Rockets.

Despite failing to take the win, Kelowna’s manager sees improvements in the Rockets game compared to Friday night when the Winterhawks destroyed the Rockets 7-3.

Coach Adam Foote praised the team’s efforts, saying that despite a talented and fast opponent, they “didn’t stop”.

“There were many positive aspects [that came] out of this game, ”said Foote in a post-game interview.

The center of the missiles, Kyle Topping, scored both of the team’s goals and was named the game’s first star.

“Portland is obviously number one in the WHL … overall it was a good test for our group,” Topping said after the game.

Foote certified goalkeeper Roman Basran to keep the team in the game – he stopped 32 of the 35 shots aimed at him. (One of Portland’s goals was scored in an empty net.)

Basran said the team just started harder on Saturday night.

“Portland is a good team. I thought we came back really well from yesterday and the week before, ”said Basran after the game.

“With all the injuries we’ve got, we’ve done a pretty good job.”

Kelowna had six injured players on Saturday, including captain Nolan Foote, who has a lower body injury week after week.

The Rockets will be back on home ice against the Tri-City Americans on Wednesday.
