The three Nordic skiers from Revelstoke are at home in quarantine after taking part in the World Championships in Finland.

“I am very happy with my races. I pushed myself, ”said Alexandra Luxmoore, competitor in the U20 category.

Almost a third of the female skiers representing Canada at the Nordic Junior and U23 Cross Country World Championships were from Revelstoke. The competition took place between February 8th and 14th.

With Luxmoore, Revelstoke’s other competitors were Elizabeth Elliott and Beth Granstrom, both of whom belong to the U23 category.

Elliot was the only Canadian to finish in the top 30 in the U23 women’s 10K skate ski race. She finished 27th with a time of 30: 24.3. Elliot also drove in the 1.1 km sprint and finished in 50th place.

Luxmoore took 50th place in the five km race, 55th place in the 1.1 km race and 42nd place in the 15 km race.

Granstrom was 42nd in the 10 km.

Luxmoore said she had few expectations for the event and was just doing her best.

Due to the pandemic, national Nordic races in Canada have been canceled. These were the first races of the season for all three athletes.

The World Championships are an important stepping stone for the Olympic Games. While travel for sports teams is banned by the provincial government, high-performance athletes like Revelstoke’s Nordic skiers are excluded from the ban, but must follow COVID-19 safety protocols.

The three Revelstoke athletes are currently in a 14-day quarantine at home and have been tested frequently before, during and after the Finnish competition.

“I’m enjoying the rest,” said Luxmoore.

She said hopefully there will be more races for this season, but it all depends on what happens to COVID-19. Even so, Luxmoore said she wanted to return to the World Cup next year.

“It was a lot of fun,” she said.
