Kelowna RCMP are not following the lead of other police forces in catching so-called porch pirates red-handed, but do have some advice on how not to become a victim.

Some police forces on the West Coast are using bait packages to catch culprits who prey on packages being delivered by couriers.

The bait packages are equipped with technology that will help police track down and identify thieves.

Kelowna RCMP said bait packages are not currently in their cards.

“We are not using the bait package at this time, I believe (New Westminster) PD is the only ones using it at this time, said Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Mike Della-Paolera.

“We do receive porch piracy complaints and they are investigated but how often we receive them I cannot say.”

Della-Paolera adds that in recent years delivery companies have increased dropping off items on doorsteps or at front doors without the occupants signing or even being home.

“The RCMP is reminding shoppers to think of alternative ways of dealing with your deliveries if you will not be at home during the day. If possible, shoppers could send their packages to their work address or perhaps to a different mailing address where someone can accept the delivery regardless of time of day. Avoid leaving your online packages waiting on your front porch.”
