Interior Health has confirmed two more COVID-19-related deaths at the Spring Valley Care Center in Rutland.

The total number of deaths related to the outbreak, first reported on April 28, now stands at 10.

The IH also reports a new positive case, bringing the total number of positive residents to 36. A total of 12 employees also tested positive for the virus.

In early May, the province announced that Rutland would be targeted with early mass vaccinations due to the high transmission rates in the community.

On Friday, IH’s chief medical health officer, Dr. De Villiers reported that around half of the people who died at the facility were not vaccinated “for various reasons”.

As he has noted in the past, others who contracted COVID-19 and died in long-term care homes may not have shown symptoms of the virus itself.

“This is a facility where there are elderly people who also have some comorbidities and some of the deceased were palliative before getting COVID,” said Dr. de Villiers.
